Also, since farming as a way of life disappeared for generations of parents and even grandparents long before our young apprentices and interns started on this path, they do not have many positive role models to look up to, and farmers and other experienced people are very few.

The lack of a Farm Bill in severely undermines all of our work. To sustain small farmers for FY will be a major challenge while local farm-to-institution infrastructure is being developed. We have been successful, but lack of USDA funding options for FY for beginning farmers programs means that a serious shortfall exists for the coming year. TOCA has helped farmers sell over 15, lbs of dried beans in the past year to restaurants on the reservation and across Arizona. We have also worked on increasing institutional sales.
